Album Reviews:

“Bird Ritual Interrupted” JAS Quintet’s second studio album (listen on Spotify)

"Guys, I was floored by your new album (heard on Spotify) - one of my favorites lately! I'm sure you are sick of people being

surprised that there is great music from Sioux Falls, but take it as a tribute. Far away from the Galilee, in Israel, where I

live.” (Daniel James Segel in Galillee, Israel)

“Your CD is stupendous. I’ve listened to all of it and I’m completely knocked out. The songs are distinctive, soulful and inventive, everyone’s playing (and singing) is impeccable and the recording quality is first class.” (Eddie Dunn for Saturday Night Jazz on KWIT in Sioux City, IA)

“On the JAS Quintet’s second album, “Bird Ritual Interrupted,” the group further refines the original musical vision introduced

on its debut, “Leap Year Baby.” The compositions by saxophonist Joel Shotwell and arranged collectively by the band find the

sweet spot between accessible and challenging. They range from the intense “Hawk” and tricky 11/4 toe-tapper “Crows” to the reggae fueled “Relatively” and tender lament “Sparrow,” featuring the lyrics and voice of the quintet’s frequent collaborator

Jami Lynn. This is a compelling album by a band that’s found its own distinctive voice in contemporary jazz.” (Karl Gehrke, Host of Jazz Nightly on South Dakota Public Radio)
